2XX People Powered Radio: Celebrating 50 Years

Event

It's not every day that you get to celebrate 50 years on the airwaves but that's exactly what 2XX is doing at Canberra Museum + Gallery.

This exhibition tells fascinating stories of the community-grown station whose humble beginnings arose as Radio ANU in two small rooms at the Australian National University Drill Hall in 1971. Making it official with a broadcasting licence, in 1976 the station was officially launched as Canberra's beloved, 2XX.

With such a strong presence in the capital, listen to some of the hard-hitting, emotional, passionate, fun, and musically lyrical snippets from programmes that have broadcast across the 50 years, from protests to punk, folk music and independent styles, Aboriginal leaders to women's rights collectives, multicultural legends to art lovers.

Learn about the events, ideas and topics that mattered to Canberrans across the decades. Step into a recreated 1970s- 80s studio. See original posters by screenprint and photo artists promoting freedom, attitude, and flat-out good times. Discover the voices, ideas and movements that shaped Canberra.
