Australia's Home Front: 1939–1945 explores the vital role everyday Australians played during World War II on the home front. From "make do and mend" to war bonds and women's auxiliary work, this exhibition highlights the resilience, innovation and quiet heroism of those who supported the war effort from afar.
Marking 80 years since the end of the conflict, the exhibition presents unique objects and stories from Canberra and beyond, drawn from the private collection of local historian Rohan Goyne. With a focus on civil defence, recognition, wartime messaging and more, visitors can explore how Australians adapted to rationing, volunteered for the cause, and contributed to major international efforts—including Canberra's surprising link to the Manhattan Project.
