Raíces & Rhythms: SONIDO brings a unique combination of live Latin American music and storytelling to The Street Theatre in Canberra, featuring the pioneering Chilean-Australian ensemble SONIDO.
Formed in Sydney in 1977 as Sonido de los Andes, SONIDO emerged from a generation of Latin American migrants who used music to maintain cultural connections and build community in Australia. Almost five decades later, the group's music moves from its Andean and Chilean roots through candombe, joropo, ranchera, Cuban son, Colombian cumbia, rock and jazz.
This special concert is interwoven with on-stage conversations hosted by musician, writer and academic Fabricio Tocco. The musicians share stories of migration, cultural identity, community and the evolution of Latin American music in Australia, alongside performances drawing on different periods of SONIDO's history.
Presented in connection with Chilean National Day, Raíces & Rhythms offers audiences an intimate encounter with the music and stories of one of Australia's enduring Latin American ensembles, celebrating nearly 50 years of music, memory and belonging.
